Moontide

This is part of a short story I'm writing. A stand-alone scene. Not a final draft, but good enough to stick on the internet. It will be in There Must be Something in the Water.

- - -

On a farm backed by a wood, under the second full moon that month, with the wind holding a chill of winter, a man was tucking his farm in for the night. His dog, older and silvered around the ears much like the man, went rigid. Its nose pointed toward the wood. Normally a quiet dog, it rumbled a warning growl and stood.

“What is it, pup?”

The farmer turned, but could see nothing in those trees. He bent down to scratch the dog’s scruff.

“We’ll go in soon, pup. Then maybe I’ll have some of that Ford woman’s brew, eh? What is it?”

The dog had started another growl, but it had turned to a whine almost as soon as it began. The hairs along its back were all raised up. Its stare had never moved. It shook a little, and its white-tipped tail curled under its body.

The man read this, and his face turned grim. He walked back to the barn and, after a few moments, returned with a shovel. He watched the trees and the two stood there for a few minutes, waiting.

Then he heard, from a wood he knew had only game trails, the soft jingle of tiny bells and horses. His grip whitened on the shovel as he listened to the sounds of hooves and bells grow.

His dog, utterly quiet now, leaned against his leg.

Under the moon, the grass was suitably phantom like. Very clearly, he saw a number of riders break cover and spill, like different coloured beads, across his field. They rode ponies, and they moved in sync like a flight of sparrows. Most made for the gate, though some jumped the low stone wall that bordered the road. One broke from the group toward him and stopped, watching.

Quietly, slowly, the man laid down his shovel.

When all the group had passed into the next field, the remaining rider sheathed his sword and moved on. His dark pony crossed the road, trotted out of sight, and the night went back to being real again.

His dog made a noise, almost like a sigh. The man bent down to scratch its ears.

“I think it best we stay inside, old pup.”

He picked up the shovel and leaned it against his truck. The dog kept watch while the man finished his chores, but nothing else disturbed the field. When he was done, the dog was watching the place where the riders were last seen. He scratched the dog’s ears again. Then he looked, too, squatting next to the dog.

“You know pup, I think I’ll keep my head tonight,” said the man after a few minutes. He glanced at the moon, hovering beyond the world, out of reach.

“I think it better to leave that brew outside, anyway. Tonight.”

It's Me Again

Yeah, okay, so I might possibly maybe totally suck at updating this. I actually have an excuse for lack of updates from the last post till the 24th- I had my math final on the 23rd, and was insanely busy with both jobs and studying.

But I have no excuse for the days following. Just sheer laziness and a distinct lack of anything writing-related. I read a book- Tigana, by Guy Gavriel Kay- which was very satisfying, but not conducive to actually getting things done. Good book, though. Very good.

Oh, I passed the test, in case anyone was wondering.

Anyway. I'm re-taking a leaf out of Cherie Priest's book (view her blog here!) and I'll be updating what I've actually done every few days. Which could be interesting since I'm doing a short story anthology, but I'm sure I can get it to work. If I tinker with the system.

SO! Without further ado, my project report:

There Must Be Something in the Water
Status: Being Written
Stories:
A Cat And A Meese; 5254 words; final draft.
A Different Kind of Magic; 838 words; final edits.
Down Came the Moon; 1500~ words; first draft.
Untitled; 1500~ words; first draft.
She Stole My Heart; 1500~ words; first draft.
The Junkyard Unicorn; 1500~ words; first draft.
The Damn Bus; N/A; unwritten.
My Shadow Stole My Name; N/A; unwritten.
A Sword In the Stone; N/A; unwritten.

When I say a story is 'unwritten', I mean that most of it isn't written. The idea and the bones of the story is there, but it exists only in a page or three of my notebook. You see, I'm great at the 'make stuff up' part or storytelling, but really shoddy about actually writing it all down as it comes. Which is what I'm working on. Anyway. Just wanted you all to know I'm not just pulling titles out of my arse to pad the project.

You might notice a few titles missing or changed. The ones missing are ideas I've deemed too weak to continue on with. Like Lacewing. It didn't really have a story. Things that have changed are...
Wrong Bus-----> The Damn Bus
A Shadow Without A Name----> My Shadow Stole My Name

Some other tidbits to lure my readers back: A Sword in the Stone features Meese. Here's a quote:
"He found it in a quarry..."
Okay, okay. That wasn't much of a quote.

And, uh, that's time.

Stay tuned, uh.. uh... Monday... for your weekly shot of Kitty. No lies, I actually have it written this time! I just work Saturday and Sunday for about.. 10 hours on average... So probably won't get any updating over the weekend.

FREE STUFF

Now that I have your attention, here's just a quick note because I'm supposed to be studying for a math test that happens in, oh, 9ish hours.

Heh.

First off- work is going well, and I've got a preliminary timetable for Fall semester... 6 courses, but one of them I've got a head start on since it's Japanese and I took a little Japanese course in High School. And History is only on one night, so it's really like 5.25 courses. Both workplaces slow down in September, which is excellent. More time, yay! Sort of. Of course, then there's 5.25 courses at school. Tuesday night and Thursday morning have a school schedule such that neither job can fit in a shift, so I guess I'll take that time as "me" time. Or....

Time to finish writing There Must Be Something in the Water!!!

Yes, now I get on to that FREE headline.

There Must Be Something in the Water is, for those who haven't devotedly followed my space on the internets (don't blame you if you don't!), a FREE anthology of short stories that will be published on Smashwords and also made available for download on this blog. Somehow.

I've set a deadline for myself.... November. Nice and italicized for obvious importance. I can't ignore it now that I've italicized it!

I aim to have it around 40, 000 words.

Stories it will have in it:
- A Cat and a Meese
- A Different Kind of Magic
- Junkyard Unicorn
- Down Came the Moon

Stories it may have in it:
- Lacewing
- Wrong Bus
- Up Came the Sun
- She Stole My Heart

There are more stories, but I have to get back to studying.

Till next time! I'll leave you with a bit of Kitty, rough and unedited.

- - - -

She was distracting him, and not in the way he usually found women distracting. That wasn't to say she wasn't hot- she was. It’s just that the little ball of electricity she was building between her hands in the passenger’s seat made him a tad nervous, and he hated to admit it. He kept telling himself that, as a guardian, she must have mastered the element. Except, said a niggling little annoying thought, the trickster temple, on principle and, from what he knew of Kitty, by apparent birth, never was stable. She certainly flaunted that trait to the extreme.

The hairs on the back of his arms waved to the static.

“Kitty,” he said, and he gripped the wheel tighter when the light flickered.

“Yeah?”

“Put it out,” he said, and he hoped she wouldn’t think it an order.

“‘Kay,” she said.

He relaxed a little as the atmosphere changed, but then realized it’d just gotten brighter. He could hear it hiss. The colour faded from his knuckles when he heard a small giggle.

To his credit, he didn’t swerve when she threw it out the windshield.

The Colour at the Top of the World

Well, I sure know how to deliver on my promise of Kitty! /sarcasm

Shit happened. I'll try not to make more empty promises. Here's some consolation candy.

A Different Kind of Magic
Type: Short Story
Length: 842 words
Stage: 2nd draft
Comments: It has, in its first draft, got two ratings on Scribophile. Both 4/5.

Onto the rest of the post, where A Different Kind of Magic actually plays a role:

I will be self-publishing a collection of short stories in an anthology titled The Colour at the Top of the World. It will be available on Smashwords and Kindle.

The bad news? I think I might charge for it.

The good news? I'll be publishing a second anthology before that, titled There Must Be Something in the Water, which will be made available for FREE (FREE!) download on Smashwords. It will contain half of the stories published in The Colour at the Top of the World.

EDIT because I was dumb last night: I'll probably be putting up a website sometime soon, and might be putting all the stories up there. The important thing is to get my name out there, right?

And... Another cool thing to update, so this blog entry will be like a short story sandwich:

Down Came the Moon
Type: Short Story
Length: 1600 words
Stage: First Draft
Comments: Shenan likes it! *glee!*
